Maria Kelly - 'Dark Places'

Maria Kelly has made her directing debut in the official video for her new single 'Dark Places'. With a theme of loneliness the video sees Kelly on a night out, parting company with friends (borrowing Ford Coppola's visual metaphor of doors closing on her figure) before making her way home where she is joined by a mirror, though somewhat dislocated vision of herself

 The video makes for the perfect accompaniment to the expressive ballad which articulates the feeling of depression.

 Musically 'Dark Places' has a lethargic staggering quality, as lyrics seem to trip hesitantly into more ordered acoustic guitar emphasising the fragility of the protagonist before becoming lost in a foreshadowing swells of atmospheric electric guitar.

Bittersweet and intelligent, 'Dark places' is a complex work by a sophisticated and challenging artist.
