HALEY - 'Bratt'
Last month saw the musical bonanza that is Record Store Day UK; and with the annual scrum by the shop shelves came a chance for labels to exhibit the latest offerings from their best and brightest.
Our pick of this years crop comes from; HALEY (fka Haley Bonar). Active since 2002 under her previous moniker, and having blown us away last year with her 'Impossible Dream' album (something of a permanent fixture in my cd player) the US born singer used the opportunity to unveil her new single 'Bratt', her first since undergoing a re-brand and change in nomenclature in March.
out via Memphis Industries, 'Bratt' is quintesstial Haley McCallum; grumbling, snarling distortion matched by lamenting cries of a jaded protagonist; but this isn't simply 'Kismet Kill' part-2. 'Bratt' strays into a more progressive, experimental territory with hints of arpeggiated synthezer bubbling up through the chorus in such a way to lift the song from its sullen feel.
Rich in texture and loaded with angst 'Bratt' marks a welcome return from one of the brightest stars in rock.
